The story of Moses and the Exodus is central to the faith of millions of Christians and Jews, and continues to inspire with its powerful messages of freedom and deliverance. This week, we look at Moses’ early life. Hidden by his mother as a baby, he was rescued by the Pharaoh’s daughter, Hatshepsut. Adopted as a prince, Moses grew up in the Egyptian royal court but never lost his Hebrew identity. After a series of tragic events, he fled Egypt and became a penniless fugitive in the wilderness of Midian.

After fleeing Egypt, Moses made his way to the wilderness of Midian. There he was welcomed into the family of Jethro, a priest of the God of the Hebrews, and lived as a shepherd for forty years, far from his former life in Egypt.

But God had other plans. He appeared to Moses in a burning bush that was not consumed by the flames and called him to return to Egypt to liberate the Hebrew people. Though Moses hesitated at first, he eventually obeyed and became God’s spokesman before Pharaoh.

God brought deliverance for the Israelites. As the Egyptian army charged to slaughter them, He parted the Red Sea, allowing His people to cross on dry ground. The same path became a watery grave for the Egyptians when the walls of water crashed down upon them.

From there, God led the Israelites through the wilderness, performing miracle after miracle. Yet the people constantly complained instead of trusting Him. Moses bore the brunt of their grumbling as their leader, but he remained faithful and cared for them with the tender heart of a shepherd.
