The Incredible Journey (Owned and Operated by Eternity Media Productions Ltd.)

An illustration is a visual depiction of text designed to aid storytelling – a concept with roots that trace back to late Middle English, where it also signified spiritual or intellectual enlightenment. At The Incredible Journey, we are committed to conveying that same spiritual enlightenment in the most effective and cost-efficient way possible.

For centuries, creating illustrations demanded immense time, talent, and resources. Artists laboured painstakingly over a single scene, paying meticulous attention to every detail. Producing a sequence of images for animation required repeating the process with subtle variations – a slow, cumbersome, and expensive endeavour. The printing press later enabled faster duplication, while computers introduced digital tools that captured creative vision more efficiently.

Today, sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) models have taken illustration and animation to a new level, delivering high-quality results with unprecedented speed and at a fraction of the former cost. Like the paintbrush, the printing press, and the computer before it, AI is simply a tool – one that can be used for good or ill. The Incredible Journey prayerfully employs AI to create illustrations and animations that illuminate God’s truth, honour donor stewardship, and maximise the reach of the gospel.

Revolutionising Biblical and Historical Storytelling:

How to Harness AI for a Small Ministry

In an era where visual storytelling captivates audiences like never before, we decided to pioneer the use of artificial intelligence to bring ancient texts and historical narratives to life. What began as an experiment in digital illustration two years ago has evolved into a sophisticated workflow for creating photorealistic AI video clips–dramatically cutting costs while maintaining creative control and spiritual integrity.

The journey started with the ministry’s Revelation Bible Study series. Illustrating the apocalyptic visions in the Book of Revelation posed a unique challenge: how to depict the ‘strange creatures’ described in scripture–multi-faced beings, hybrid animals, and otherworldly scenes–without relying on generic stock art or expensive custom commissions. Using early AI image generation tools, we produced vivid, custom illustrations that captured the prophetic imagery with striking detail. The results were so compelling that we began using these new tools to enhance our video productions, replacing static images that once served as visual aids.

From Static Images to Immersive Video

As AI video models advanced to photorealistic quality, the shift from stills to motion became natural. Instead of freezing key moments, we could now generate dynamic clips that immerse viewers in the narrative flow. This transition marked a turning point, allowing our educational and evangelistic videos to compete visually with high-budget productions.

Dramatic Cost Saving for Ministry Stewardship

For a small ministry stewarded by donor funds, financial wisdom is paramount. Traditional filmmaking options come with steep price tags. Re-enactments require actors, costumes, sets, and crew, and we will continue to use them where they best serve the story. Licensing existing footage can cost up to $1,000 per second for premium historical or dramatic material, translating to $60,000 per minute. Even building and filming historic scenes, such as 19th-century factory worker environments for Karl Marx-era content, demands extensive resources for construction, props, and logistics.

AI offers a compelling alternative. Rather than licensing or staging complex shots, the team invests a day of skilled labour and roughly $50–100 in rendering costs per minute of video clips. The return on investment is transformative: high-quality, tailored visuals at a fraction of the expense, freeing donor dollars for core ministry work like outreach, production, printing, and distribution.

Our AI Production Process

Our structured process ensures consistency and quality. It flows through these clear steps:

1. Developing Character, Wardrobe, Animal, and Object Descriptions– detailed prompts that define appearance, clothing styles, and symbolic elements faithful to historical or biblical accuracy.

2. Developing Scene Descriptions – crafting precise environmental, action, and mood narratives for each shot.

3. Generating Face-Closeup and Full-Body Images– these establish visual consistency for recurring characters.

4. Creating Starting and Ending Frames for each shot– these provide the AI video model with clear visual anchors.

5. Rendering the Video Clips – using advanced motion models to bring the sequence to life.

6. Refining and Adjusting– if the first render doesn’t fully match our vision, we tweak the scene description and render again. This incremental process is remarkably similar to traditional filming, where a director calls for multiple takes until the scene captures exactly the right emotion, movement, and symbolism.

Diverse Projects Brought to Life

This methodical approach has powered compelling projects across diverse topics. For the Karl Marx series, AI recreated industrial-era factories and period attire without constructing physical sets. The Banjo Paterson – The Man from Snowy River production brought Australian bush poetry to life with sweeping landscapes and authentic outback details. Episodes on Who Were the Kamikaze used AI to depict wartime scenes respectfully and accurately, while the Mary Jones story illustrated the young girl’s determined journey with emotional depth and historical fidelity. Other projects have similarly benefited from this technology.

Creative Freedom and Faithful Innovation

Beyond cost savings, AI enables greater creative freedom. Scenes too ambitious or sensitive for live filming, such as supernatural biblical events, large-scale historical battles, or intimate personal moments, become feasible. We maintain full oversight, aligning every frame with scriptural truth and educational goals.

As AI tools continue to mature, we as a ministry want to stand as a model for faith-based organisations worldwide: faithful stewardship meets thoughtful technological innovation. By transforming donor resources into powerful visual testimonies, we are not only illustrating God’s Word and human history – we are making it unforgettable for a new generation of viewers.
