Then everyone deserted him and fled. – Mark 14:50
It must have been a shocking and terrifying event for the disciples. They had been peacefully sleeping. And suddenly their rest was interrupted by the torchlight, and the sounds of an angry mob. The flight or fight reflex took over. And the flight reflex won.
Jesus didn’t want his disciples to fight for him with swords or clubs. He wanted them to fight for him by staying as close to him as possible. This was his hour of need, and Jesus needed them.
Despite the horror of it all, what a blessing it would have been if they had all been with John and witnessed the most important moment, not just of their lives, but of all of history! What a blessing it would have been for them to have heard the words of Jesus from the Cross. But they all deserted him and fled. And no wonder. It could be them next!
