Every year on the second Sunday of May in many countries, with flowers, chocolates and gifts, we celebrate a very important person in our lives and in our communities – our Mothers.

Mothers are the cornerstone of our families and of our society. They are the glue that holds the family together. Their love is immense. A mother’s love is strong, unconditional and eternal and we cannot imagine life without the love and support of a mother.

Brooke Ellison was just 11 years old on her first day of seventh grade when she was hit by a car and left paralyzed from the neck down. Though given little chance of survival, through a combination of sheer will, family support and her mother’s devotion, Brooke and her mother have become an inspiration.

Against all the odds, Brooke did the impossible. With the tireless support of her mother, Jean Marie, Brooke graduated magna cum laude in 2000 from Harvard University. In 2002 Brooke’s inspirational life story was published in ‘Miracles Happen: One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey.’ It’s truly moving to read about Brooke’s appreciation of her mother’s love and devotion.

Like Brooke, we want to show how much we appreciate our mothers and their involvement in our lives

Today, Mother’s Day is a day for all women. Each of us has a mother. There is no role in life that is more essential and important than that of motherhood. Your mother is your first friend, your best friend and your forever friend. And there is no more permanent imprint on a life than the one made by a mother.

A mother’s sacrifice and unconditional love has the unique and powerful ability to guide and shape children’s lives for eternity. And that’s why when God wants to explain His love to us – He uses the example of a mother’s love. Because a mother’s love is one of the clearest pictures of God’s love for us, His children. It is a gift and there is no treasure that is equal to it.

A mother’s love for her children is one of the strongest and most mysterious forces in the world. It carries her through the pain of childbirth. It washes over her face as she smiles at her baby for the first time. It endures through exhausting days and sleepless nights, over the course of months and years. It is nurturing, faithful, protective, sacrificial, enduring and unconditional.

Being a mother is perhaps the hardest, most rewarding job a woman will ever experience. So, to all the mothers who have loved and sacrificed for their children and families, we thank you. We honour you and celebrate you.
