How can I be saved? That’s the most important question we can ever ask. And it’s so vitally important because it deals with where we will spend eternity after our lives in this world are over. There’s no more important issue than our eternal destiny. And that’s why people have been asking this question for thousands of years. Thankfully, the Bible provides the answer. The Bible is abundantly clear on how we can be saved.

Two thousand years ago a jailer in the Roman Empire asked two of Jesus followers this very same question, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. (Acts 16:31) So, there’s the answer. It’s as simple as that.

But, to understand why we need to be saved, it’s important to realise that we’re all involved in a cosmic struggle between right and wrong, light and darkness, good and evil, between God and Satan, a rebel angel. This conflict began in heaven when Satan, rebelled against God. Satan then brought his rebellion to planet earth.

Now, originally God created a perfect world for our first parents, Adam and Eve, to live in. God created them and loved them. They had a close and perfect relationship with God. But Satan deceived them into joining his rebellion against God.

Sin entered the world. And sadly, sin infected Adam and Eve and all their descendants and totally wrecked their relationship with God. Now we are born with a sinful nature and so commit sins because we are sinners by nature. And we are not only sinners by nature but also by practice, by choice. We’ve all made mistakes and done things that we know are wrong. Yes, we’ve all sinned and joined the rebellion against God

Sin has consequences. The penalty for sin, or rebellion against God, is death. So, because we’re all sinners by nature, choice and practice, we’re all condemned to death. We’re doomed. But God really loves us. He doesn’t want us to die. He wants to save us and have a close relationship with us again. So, God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the penalty for our sins, to die in our place

And so, if we accept Jesus, and believe in Him, we are saved from the penalty of death. Our sins are forgiven, and we have eternal life. So, back to our original question: How Can I be Saved? Well, here are 8 simple Bible steps you can take to make sure you’re saved.

Step number 1. Admit I’m a sinner.
The Bible says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

Step number 2. Recognise that the penalty for sin is death and that I am doomed.
The Bible says: “For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23)

Step number 3. Recognise that I need a Saviour, someone to save me.
The Bible says: Surely, I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
(Psalm 51:5) NIV

Step number 4. Believe in Jesus and Accept Him as my Saviour
The Bible says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Step number 5. Repent and confess my sins.
The Bible says: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1John 1:9)
We need to be genuinely sorry for our sins and mistakes. We need to turn away from the things that are wrong in our lives.

Step number 6. Get baptised.
The Bible says: “Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved.” (Mark 16:16)
Baptism is the sign that I believe in Jesus and accept His death on the cross in my place. It’s a public demonstration that I accept Jesus as my Saviour and that I have chosen to follow and obey Him.

Step number 7. Experience the New Birth.
The Bible says: “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone, a new life has begun.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) NLT
Jesus said that when we believe in Him and are saved it’s like being born again. I become a new person. I get a new nature. The old life is gone and I start a new life with Jesus living in me.

Step number 8. Accept Jesus as Lord of my life.
The Bible says: As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
(Colossians 2:6)
Jesus wants to be your friend. He wants to have a close relationship with me. He wants to walk with me always and be the Lord of my life. I need to accept Jesus as Lord and follow Him.

So, there they are – 8 simple Bible steps regarding how I can be saved.
Step 1. Admit I’m a sinner.
Step 2. Recognise that the penalty for sin is death and that I am doomed.
Step 3. Recognise that I need a Saviour, someone to save me.
Step 4. Believe in Jesus and Accept Him as my Saviour.
Step 5. Repent and confess my sins.
Step 6. Get baptised.

And now back to our original question – How can I be saved? Well, there’s the answer. It’s as simple as that – 8 simple Bible steps to being saved. And here’s the good news. You don’t have to wait. You can believe and take the first steps right now. You can start a friendship, a relationship with God right now. You CAN be saved. Just pray this prayer with me.

Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sins and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him and accept Him as my Saviour and follow Him as Lord, from this day forwards. Please guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
