The Beatitudes can be seen as being revolutionary. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addressed a primarily Jewish audience and used many phrases and ideas common to Jewish thinking and law at that time. But the Beatitudes presented values that were the opposite of that culture and are also opposite to the values of our time.
