Have you ever tried to kick a bad habit or start a new one only to flounder? Most people anticipate a new year by making a list of resolutions but realise about a third of the way into the new year that most of those good intentions have fallen by the wayside.

Generally speaking, human beings are capable of setting new habits and patterns but we’re not so good at kicking old ones. Studies show that once a habit has become embedded in your brain you can’t really erase it, you can only replace it.

But the Bible offers us hope beyond this. The Bible tells us that through Jesus we can become new creatures; a new creation. With God, even the most tenacious habits and patterns can not only be changed, they can also be exchanged for something better.

Let’s dive into the Bible and take a look at what it says about how Jesus can give us the power we need to transform our lives.

Fact number 1. Jesus promises to recreate us when we give our lives to Him.

The Bible says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Fact number 2. We can’t change ourselves. We need help.

The Bible says: “Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil.
” Jeremiah 13:23.

Fact number 3. Jesus described the transformation He offers as a new birth.

The Bible says: “There was a man … named Nicodemus … Jesus … said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’. ‘Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God’” John 3:1-5.

Fact number 4. This transformation can only happen through total surrender to Jesus.

The Bible says: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20.

Fact number 5. We are saved by the grace of God and not by our works.

The Bible says: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8,9.

Fact number 6. When we accept Jesus, He gives us power to change our lives.

The Bible says: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12.

Fact number 7. When Jesus enters our hearts, He will reproduce the fruits of the Spirit in us.

The Bible says: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-25)

Fact number 8. When Jesus enters our hearts we are adopted as children of God.

The Bible says: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God … You received the Spirit of adoption … We are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.” Romans :14-17.

Fact number 9. When Jesus enters our hearts we become members of the family of heaven.

The Bible says: For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. (Ephesians 3:14-15)

And finally, fact number 10. Jesus stands at the door of our hearts waiting for us to let Him in.

The Bible says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20
